A trip does not have to wreck your training. The trick is to pick the gym before you leave, not after you land.
Search before you go
Search the city on ChalkMap or browse the map around your hotel. Turn on the filters that matter to you: chalk, platforms, 24/7 access. You can also browse by state or province. Check the distance from where you will stay, since a great gym 40 minutes away rarely gets used.
Read the gym's own page
Open the gym's website and look for day-pass or drop-in details, hours and rules. A gym that publishes its chalk rule is a good bet. Our list of gyms that say chalk is allowed shows the exact words, and each gym page links to the source.
Ask about drop-ins
Not every gym sells day passes. Some require a call or an appointment. Others only allow members. Message or call a day or two ahead. Ask what a day pass costs, what hours it covers and whether it includes the lifting area. A 24/7 gym may not give day-pass visitors after-hours access, so ask.
Ask the chalk question early
Use the short script in how to ask your gym about chalk. One quick message saves a wasted trip.
Packing chalk
Liquid chalk is easier to travel with than a block, but it is a liquid. If you fly with carry-on only, check your airline and airport rules for liquids, since a larger bottle may need to go in checked luggage. A block of chalk may spill in a bag, so seal it well. If a gym provides chalk, you can leave yours at home. Some state it on their pages.
Bring what you need to lift
Pack your belt, straps or sleeves. Do not count on the gym having them. If you use a particular bar or plates, check the equipment list on the gym's site before you plan around it.
Have a backup
Pick a second gym within reach in case the first has a surprise, like a class taking over the lifting area. A hotel gym can fill in for a light day, but it rarely has what a heavy day needs.
A short checklist
- Search the city and read the gym's page
- Message ahead about day passes and chalk
- Check hours and distance from where you stay
- Pack chalk the right way for how you travel
- Have a backup gym
